Eric and I were excited to note a couple of weeks ago that Hillside Quickie is now serving brunch. We tried to go by earlier today (at 10:23 a.m. to be precise), but we were informed that they are not open till 11 (despite the sign you see above). This is typical of Hillside Quickie - you can't refer to their website or their posted hours - basically they're open when they say they're open. Eric and I have decided that we always need to have backup plans when gearing ourselves to go here.

Neighborhood Gem: Queen Sheba
Ethiopian Christians tell this story about Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Their version holds that the Queen of Sheba was an Ethiopian sovereign named Makeda (Magda) and that she returned from her celebrated journey to the court of Solomon in Jerusalem bearing the king's son, David, who became the first king of Ethioipia, ruling as Menelik. You can find this story on Queen Sheba Restaurant's website. Beware! Google sometimes leads you astray to a Queen Sheba in Sacramento, CA . Eric and I try to go to the Seattle one at least once a week, and we always get the same thing: one Vege Combo Platter each. I note that some Yelpers and some of our friends split one Vege Combo between them, but both Eric and I have bigger appetites than to do that. The Vege Combo gives the diner a taste of nearly all the vegetarian options on Queen Sheba's menu: the Gomen (greens sauteed in olive oil, garlic, onions and fresh spices), the Misser Wot (split red lentils in onions, olive oil and a spicy red sauce), the Kike (ground peas prepared with onion, garlic, ginger and turmeric), and the Shiro Wot (ground peas spiced with berbere, seasoned with onions, garlic, and ginger) - accompanied by some delicious spiced cabbage and potato. You wrap these tasty stews in bits of Injera. Eric pairs his Vege Combot with either Harar or a Washington microbrew while I have been opting for the honey wine (Tej) lately. Queen Sheba is located in a ramshackle but charming house located just East of Broadway on East John (916 East John Street / 98102). I would recommend this place as a great first-date place (inexpensive delicious vegan food - with dim lighting and an authentic bohemian vibe). We have only been to dinner but apparently - they are open for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays.
