Hillside Quickie Sweet Southern Brunch

Hillside Quickie recently began offering brunch - a nice vegan alternative to 15th Avenue staples such as Coastal Kitchen, 22 Doors and Smith. Eric chose "Spicy Cajun Mac & Yease, Southern Fried Seitan Steak, Biscuits Grits & Gravy"and I picked the "Smoked Yam & Caramelized Onion Crepes with Cajun Fried Okra". Eric said he would give his dish 3/5 stars. His main complaint was that the Seitan Steak was dry (surprising considering that one of Hillside Quickie's strengths is their use of sauces, toppings & gravies). I would give my crepes 3/5 stars. The crepes were soggy and the yams were sweet and mushy. The deep-fried okra was a nice touch but the cornmeal batter overwhelmed the vegetable and was bland. I ended up peeling off the batter and eating the fried okra and enjoyed that. Ignore their website and the signage on their 15th avenue store regarding the hours - they generally open at 11 am on Saturday & Sunday for brunch.

I loved everything about the spicy mac & yease, southern fried seitan and biscuits and grits. I'm not vegan at all, but that was delicious. One friend had the waffle sandwich entry which was mediocre I thought. However, the absolute winner in our group was their pancake stack with the fruit and custard. I wish I remembered more about it so I could describe it, but it's been more than a week now. I just remember that I would recommend that or my dish to anyone, vegan or not.
