Each year, the D.C. Office of the CFO publishes a study of state and local taxes that compares the estimated tax burden at five annual-income levels in the largest city in each of the 50 states, plus D.C. The estimated tax burden includes state and/or city income tax, property tax, sales tax, and automobile tax. The graph above shows the estimated 2006 state and local tax burden as a percentage of total income as well as Seattle's tax burden rank among the 51 largest U.S. cities for a dual income couple with one school-age child. As you can see from the graph, Seattle is not a great place to be for households making $25k. Whereas, only 7 cities are better places to live for a household making at least $150k.
